Wedding hairstyles with flowers: Your choices

Some of the most popular items we get brides asking us for are wedding hair flowers. It’s not hard to see why these pretty little additions to your final look are frequently requested – when else do you get to wear a crown of real flowers or have a unique hair comb especially handmade to your specifications, colour requirements or overall desired vibe?

As we see it, there really are no rules when it comes to wedding hairstyles with flowers, so if you can dream it we can probably do it. For those who like a working with a stimulus though, help is at hand. Below we’ve detailed a few different things you can do when it comes to floral headpieces.

Wedding hairstyles with flowers: Flower crowns

Guys, we’re not ashamed to say it: We LOVE a flower crown. There was some chat this year that pointed to flower crowns being ‘old news’, but we’ve got news for anyone thinking that, we consider these guys as TIMELESS and we don’t care who knows it. From greenery circlets to lush and low floral bands, you can pretty much create a flower crown appropriate for any wedding theme or vibe. Popular choices are all gypsophila (or baby’s breath) to create a cloud-like surround for angelic flower girl faces, all foliage fellas for woodland nymph-esque brides and classic, clean white jobs that are secretly our favourite, just don’t tell the others. Generally, we use the freshest, British blooms for ours where we can and tie them with luxuriously hand-dyed silk ribbons for a soft, romantic finish. Flower crowns can be worn like a headband, with it sitting sort of upright on your head, with the ties brought together at the nape of your neck, or else they can be pulled across the front of your forehead to give them more prominence, and tied just below the crown of your head. If you fancy something a little more unusual, we can make a partial flower crown, which is typically a half circle and sits around the back of your head, framing your chosen hairstyle with pretty petals and wispy pieces of lush foliage. Our go-to method for these is to use a piece of covered wire as the base so that they can easily mould to your hairstyle and are simple for your hairdresser to pin in with grips. They give a really glorious ethereal edge and are perfect for showcasing Scottish ferns or trailing lengths of greenery. Because of the nature of these beauties they aren’t regularly adorned with any extras like ribbon, but as ever, your wish is our command so if you’re looking for us to help you with one and decide you’d like some trails, sparkles or additional wee bits of finery, just let us know. Floral headbands are a great middle(wo)man for those wanting an impactful design which remains delicate. Because a headband, by its very nature, doesn’t go all the way round, these create a gorgeous halo of flowers across the top of your head and are great for little ones too. They’re easy to put on and off and don’t have the risk factor of slipping or ties coming loose. We like to make our flower headbands with little textural bits and pieces to make them feel truly organic, adding just a few key florals that then become the focus of the piece. After flower crowns, flower combs are probably the most asked for item when it comes to wedding hairstyles with flowers. They can be pretty much worked into any updo, or partial-updo you can think of and add a pop of colour or a little movement to the back of your bonce. Making their way into many a sweet hugging pic, we have a certain soft spot for these tiny, intricate works of floral art. We can make them so that they’re wired out to each end, which elongates the piece which can then be bent around your head a little, giving a look of a partial flower crown. Alternatively, we can make them true to the size of the comb so that they fit neatly into a half-up hairdo or even make them half size, using smaller combs. We make these on premium gold slides so that they photograph beautifully and can be kept afterwards if the flowers play nicely and dry out okay. If you’re having a veil it can be hard to work around out how it will look with a flower crown or comb pieces (although anything is possible, so if you fancy the best of both worlds, speak to us or your hairdresser to work out the finer details). Enter: Single flowers. We can either provide them as straight up little snips, which are taped to keep them fresher for longer, for your florist to pin into place, or we can attach them to small pieces of wire to add length and a little extra robustness, which are then equally pinned in by your florist. One of our favourite ways to use single flowers is to scatter them through your loose hair by tucking them into tiny sea through bobbles attached to little sections of your hair to make you look like a bloody beautiful fairy creature. Single flowers allow your hairdresser to easily work blooms into your chosen style, responding to the final shape and size of both flower and hairdo. Fancy a few little things strung together and but not sure about a full comb or flower crown? There’s a solution we’re ever so pleased to say. We can wire together small sections of flowers which give more of an arranged feel while still keeping to nearly single-stem-sized pieces. These are great if you have a half up half down style and want a few little florals woven into your look but prefer them made up in advance, rather than piecing together single flowers at the time.
